Internship & Service Grant

The Nanovic Institute supports student summer internship and service opportunities in a variety of fields. This grant funds a wide variety of foreign-language and English-speaking opportunities that allow students to build their professional experience while simultaneously sharpening their knowledge of a European language and culture. In order to apply, students must have arranged a summer internship or volunteer opportunity in Europe. Internship & Service funding covers flights, lodging, and research-related expenses. For more information on funding details and restrictions, see effective budgeting. Students from all fields of study are encouraged to apply for internship or service funding, but projects must be closely connected to European studies in order to be considered. Maximum award: $6,000.00.

In addition to independently organized internships, the Institute supports internships organized through the Dublin and Rome Global Gateways.

How to Get Started

  • Find an internship or service opportunity. Students are encouraged to review previous Nanovic supported opportunities below, or work with Career Services or their academic department to identify an appropriate opportunity.
  • Clarify the terms of your internship or service project. Will it be paid, unpaid? How many hours a week will you work? How will you be supervised? Note this funding cannot be used for fee-based programs.
  • Identify a Notre Dame faculty member who can serve as your faculty recommender.
  • Review proposal writing and budgeting guidelines.

Award Expectations and Requirements

Grant recipients are required to obtain the proper permissions for international travel from Notre Dame International prior to payment of the stipend. Once awarded, the funding must be used to complete the proposed internship or service by the beginning of the next academic year. Nanovic-sponsored travel may not interfere with class attendance or completion of final exams as scheduled.

Combined funding from this grant and other sources may not exceed the proposed budget total, and applicants must promptly inform the Nanovic Institute of additional funding received at any point from application submission through completion of the internship. Recipients must return any paid funds if they cancel the scheduled internship and must repay any non-refundable expenses incurred by the Nanovic Institute (i.e. airfare directly paid) if cancellation is not due to documented illness or another justifying circumstance.

After conducting the project, grant recipients must provide the Nanovic Institute with reporting materials including a brief project report and photos. Students must also submit scans of all flight and lodging receipts pertaining to the trip.
