Undergraduate Grants

Sigler Cynthia Spain Summer 2019 800x1200
Cynthia Sigler '19 received a travel and research grant to Spain from the Nanovic Institute.

The Nanovic Institute’s suite of undergraduate grants engage students in transformative learning beyond the classroom.

Research, internship, and language study grants connect students to the cultures and ideas that have and continue to shape Europe today. All students, regardless of their field of study, are encouraged to consider applying for Nanovic funding. Students interested in applying for funding should familiarize themselves with the Institute’s research priorities and review upcoming deadlines. The Institute offers a number of resources on grant proposal writing and research including one on one advising and a 1-credit research methods and project design course.

Questions? Contact Student Programs Assistant Manager Anna Dolezal or schedule a meeting.

Notre Dame International (NDI) requests that all students who are planning on or applying to travel over the spring break submit a “Safety Assessment Travel Risk Management Plan” no later than the end of day April 7, 2022. This is separate from and in addition to any grant application to the Nanovic Institute. Travel approval through NDI also requires permission from a students' Dean of college or school.

Grant Opportunities

Research Grants

Research grants support independent undergraduate research projects in Europe. Students work with a faculty advisor to develop a research question, methodology, and project design. Research projects can be exploratory in nature, but should always contribute to a students’ academic or professional goals. Grants are awarded for research taking place over fall, winter, spring, and summer breaks.

Application deadline:

  • Fall Break: September 14, 2021
  • Winter Break: November 16, 2021
  • Spring Break: February 1, 2022
  • Summer Break: April 5, 2022
Internship & Service Grants

The internship and service grant provides funding to students who have secured internships or service projects in Europe. The project should be connected to European studies, rather than just taking place in Europe. Grant funding covers flights, lodging, and modest living expenses over the course of the internship or service project. This grant is only offered over summer break.

  • Application deadline: April 5, 2022
Language Study Grants

The Institute supports and encourages the study of European languages through the Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures’ Summer Language Abroad Grant, as well as our Pushkin Grant for Russian language acquisition and language club support grants.

All student grant applications are due at 11:59 p.m. on the deadline day.
