Roy Kimmey

Senior Program Manager, Student Research and Academic Affairs

Roy Kimmey is the senior program manager for student research and academic affairs at the Nanovic Institute and the director of undergraduate studies for the minor in European studies. In these capacities, he provides guidance for students looking to undertake service work and study in and about Europe.

Before coming to Notre Dame, Roy completed a Ph.D. in modern European history in 2022 at the University of Chicago, where he served for two additional years as a postdoctoral teaching fellow in the social sciences. He holds degrees in history and religious studies from Central European University (M.A., 2012) and history and music from Harvard University (B.A., 2009).

Over the past decade, Roy has had the profound privilege of living, researching, and working in Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, and Hungary. His scholarship and teaching address the politics of everyday life in postwar Eastern Europe, with a focus on minority representation, populism, and Romani studies. His current book manuscript, A Question in History, a History in Question: Romani Politics and Policies in State Socialist Hungary, investigates the development and legacy of state socialist-era education, labor, and housing policies and practices. This project is supported by the Fulbright IIe (Hungary), the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, and grants from departments and units at the University of Chicago.
