Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students are at the heart of the work of the Nanovic Institute. From its foundation, the Institute was built to connect students to transformative experiences in Europe.

The institute supports the education and formation of undergraduate programs through a variety of curricular and co-curricular opportunities as well as on-campus events and activities. Students from all majors with an interest in Europe are encouraged to consider a minor in European studies. The institute is pleased to offer a number of engaging and challenging courses open to all students on the past, present, and future of Europe through our EURO curriculum.

In addition to these academic programs, the Institute offers a comprehensive suite of grants for Notre Dame undergraduates who seek to conduct research or an internship in Europe or learn a European language. Students can apply for funding to visit archives in Rome, teach English in Ukraine, or intern at a European institution. The Nanovic Institute also organizes a number of group undergraduate research projects. Previous undergraduate research projects have included, "Europe Responds to the 2020 U.S. Election," "The Road to Europe: Exploring EU Candidacy in the Western Balkans," and "Healthcare and Healing: Exploring Europe's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic."

    Eileen is currently serving as Badin Hall's vice president and on the nutrition and health & wellness committees for student government. Besides that, she is the chief of staff for The Women's Network -Notre Dame campus and loves to be involved in Student International Business Council as well. If she has free time you will find her out on the quad with friends practicing field hockey or reading a book.

    Class of 2027

    Michaela Cooper is a third-year student from St. Louis, Missouri, pursuing a BBA in strategic management with minors in European studies and real estate. To Michaela, minoring in European studies offers the chance to better understand different cultures, ways of life, and the challenges people face across the world. As part of this minor, she received a Research Grant for Winter 2024 and traveled to Madrid, Spain, to study the ongoing housing crisis. Her project, Stripped of Four Walls, Stripped of Dignity, focused on how local residents are being displaced from their homes and the lack of intervention from the government to address the issue. Michaela is deeply passionate about affordable housing and has thoroughly valued the opportunities and courses that have allowed her to grow and explore these important topics.

    Grace Davenport is part of Notre Dame's Class of 2027 with Majors in Global Affairs and Anthropology. She is also minoring in European Studies, and is Interested in Public Policy and Government. She is a EURO fellow and will be participating in Notre Dame's Washington Program in the Spring of 2026. Her hometown is Aurora, Oregon, and she speaks both Spanish and German.

After her 2025 summer abroad in Paris, she is enjoying exploring the intersection of her academic and cultural interests as part of the Marketing and Communications team at the Nanovic Institute for European Studies.

    Demetra is a junior studying global affairs and political science with a minor in European studies. This past summer, with support from the Nanovic Institute, she conducted cultural research in Greece. Her project, "Living with Tourism: How Local Business Owners Adapt to and Perceive Tourism’s Impact in Zakynthos, Greece" examines local perspectives and practices regarding tourism's cultural, economic, and environmental impacts. Demetra is also excited to study abroad in Rome in the spring.

    Aaliyah is a sophomore double majoring in English and film, with a minor in European studies. She takes a special interest in literature, writing, and global storytelling. She chooses her classes and activities with these passions in mind; most recently, she participated in the Serving (In) Europe program through the Nanovic Institute.

    Kate Greve is a fourth-year Architecture student minoring in European studies and Italian. With a strong interest in historic restoration architecture, Kate discovered European studies as the perfect intersection of her passions for architecture and history. To deepen her engagement with European culture and heritage, she spent a year living and studying in Europe. This included two semesters in Rome with the School of Architecture, two months studying in Berlin, and two weeks volunteering in Burgundy, France, where she helped restore a 12th-century Romanesque church.

    Paul Kaminski is a second-year student majoring in Finance with a minor in European Studies. With support from the Nanovic Institute, he participated in a joint program with the Catholic University of Lublin that focused on Polish-Jewish identity in the Lublin region before, during, and after the Holocaust over the summer.

    Francesca Lichtenberger is a ​j​unior from Minneapolis, Minnesota, pursuing a B.A. (Honors) in political science. On campus, Francesca is involved in Student Government, Model United Nations, Walsh Hall Council, and the Women in International Security Society. Francesca holds fellowships with the Nanovic Institute of European Studies, the Notre Dame International Security Center, ​the Notre Dame Democracy Initiative, and ​Kellogg Developing Researchers Program. ​Francesca was recently awarded a​n undergraduate research grant by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies to pursue a fully funded independent study in Paris. Her project, “The Politics and Policies of Belonging: Exploring Migrant Narratives in Contemporary Paris,” examines how colonial legacies shape current immigration politics in France.

    Andy is a senior studying Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics (ACMS) with minors in European Studies and French. Through the Nanovic Institute, Andy has studied abroad in Tours, France, (Summer 2023) and in London, England (Fall 2024). He continues to work with Nanovic by engaging with the Institute's research on peripheries in Europe and participating in Midwest Model EU.

    Natalie is studying global affairs and Arabic, with minors in European studies and peace studies. With support from the Nanovic Institute, she traveled to Poland in the spring of 2025 to conduct independent research how identity shapes support for populist ideals.

    Abby is a senior studying art history and anthropology with a minor in European Studies. After spending a semester in Toledo, Spain, she recently traveled to the Spanish Basque Country with funding from the Nanovic Institute to conduct research for the Sites of Memory project and her ongoing Art History Senior Thesis.

    Manouny Ouatara is a junior from Phoenix, Arizona, pursuing a B.A. in political science at the University of Notre Dame. She serves as a digital forensics investigator with the St. Joseph County Cyber Crimes Unit. Additionally, she works as a tutor at the Writing Center, and she interns for event management operations with Notre Dame Athletics.
    She currently hold fellowship with the Klau Institute for Civil and Human Rights. She is a Balfour-Hesburgh Scholar, a McInerny Scholar, and an IGNITE Fellow. Passionate about community and cultural engagement, she serves as the Community Engagement Chair for the African Student Association and as the Social Responsibility Officer for the Black Business Association of Notre Dame. Manouny was part of Nanovic Institute’s Diplomacy Scholars cohort for Spring 2025.

    Leticia is a senior from São Paulo, Brazil, studying Business Analytics and Global Affairs, with minors in European Studies and Finance. Through the Nanovic Institute, she has conducted field research in Portugal and Switzerland, focusing on labor market integration and multilateral institutions. She’s also a Kellogg Developing Researcher, where she assists professor Scott Mainwaring on his research about democracy in Latin America.

    Alexandra Y. Sánchez is a junior from Canovanas, Puerto Rico. She is currently studying abroad in Toledo, Spain, broadening her academic and cultural perspectives. Having completed multiple accounting internships, Alexandra is interested in exploring the intersection of accounting, real estate, and international business to understand global markets.

    Alexandra is a Building Bridges and Transformational Leaders Scholar. As an undergraduate research assistant, she studies how Hurricane María affected Puerto Rican art and literature in subsequent years, combining her interest in cultural expression with her role as a gallery teacher at the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art, where she leads tours and teaches classes in Spanish and English such as Moreau. She also serves as President of the Caribbean Student Association, promoting Caribbean culture and representation on campus and participates in the Jubilee Initiative for Financial Inclusion, promoting financial literacy in the South Bend community.

    Darah Santos is a senior studying Finance, originally from Curitiba, Brazil. She has spent a summer in Bulgaria through Nanovic's Serving (In) Europe program. Currently, she assists the Nanovic team in providing the best experience for other students and staff. She loves talking about travel, geopolitics, books, food, music, volleyball, and arts and crafts in general.

    Matthew is a global affairs and theology major with minors in European studies and French. He is a Nanovic EURO Fellow and Diplomacy Fellow as well as the director of design for Notre Dame Right to Life and faith commissioner in Baumer Hall, the undisputed best hall on campus. He is interested in a career working in the implementation of Catholic social teaching. He currently works part time at the Nanovic Institute.

    Danica is a sophomore in Welsh Fam studying political science and film, television, and theatre. She is also a student assistant in the Nanovic Institute, and she is currently working on a project called “Sites of Memory,” that involves various different historical landmarks and areas all across Europe. Working on this project has given her an opportunity to learn about the nuances of these landmarks and how people view them differently across time periods. Danica has never been to Europe, but she would love to go to Germany some day, as she's been studying German for her entire time at Notre Dame and thinks the country is absolutely stunning.

    Samuel Viner is a senior majoring in American studies with minors in European studies and theology. He has spent time researching climate migration through the lens of Hannah Arendt, and recently presented at the Conference for European Studies in Philadelphia this summer.
