The Catholic Leadership Institute 2017
The Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame, in partnership with Nonprofit Certificate Education at Mendoza College of Business, will host European Catholic university officials July 6-14, 2018, for the second annual Catholic Leadership Institute, an intensive management training program for higher education professionals that has been internationalized to serve those working in former Soviet bloc countries.

1:30 – 5:00 PM | Welcome and Introduction of Attendees: The Importance of Leadership Development for Catholic Leaders
This is a “get to know each other” session and a time to talk about important leadership issues that affect all of us. Each participant will have a two-minute introduction to let us know who you are and a little about your organization. This is a very interactive session and is designed to be fun and engaging while also discovering the things — including potential leadership challenges that we have in common.

1:30 – 5:00 PM | The Leader's Role in Fundraising
This will be an interactive session where participants will be exposed to the latest research on donor giving patterns and motivations, and what nonprofits must do to create alignment between the donor and their organizations.

This session will be a continuation from Sunday afternoon.
1:30 – 5:00 PM | Strengths Based Leadership
Do we really know our strengths as leaders? This session will include the book “Strengths Based Leadership,” a thoroughly researched assessment tool. We will be given an individual assessment to refer to as the week unfolds.
TUESDAY JULY 10, 2018
8:30 AM – 12:00 PM | Conflict Management – Leveraging Polarities
At the personal level, how do you make a difference while also enjoying life? At the organizational level, how do you centralize for coordination and decentralize for responsiveness? These are trick questions: Successful organizations can’t choose one or the other, they need to combine the polarities for optimal effectiveness. This session will help you distinguish between problems you can solve and polarities you can leverage.
1:30 – 5:00 PM | Fundraising through Storytelling
Donors are more inclined to give to causes they care about. Creating a compelling story about your organization and its successes is the foundation to making that emotional connection. This session will teach you how to use storytelling to encourage donor engagement and giving.

This workshop helps nonprofit leaders prepare their organizations for the evaluation process as it relates to leadership, organizational culture, resources, structures and organizational context. Participants will learn how the evaluation process can save resources, increase the quality of their evaluations and prepare their organizations for long-term engagement in program evaluation.

This session will focus on practical aspects of people at work. Whether you are an employee, manager, volunteer or senior executive, you will reflect in new ways about your role and the context in which you work. The specific goal is to provide attendees with tools to help build and develop an excellent team — with a particular emphasis on hiring, evaluating and coaching employees.
1:30 – 5:00 PM | Essentials of Strategic Planning
If you are frustrated by a lack of direction, growth stagnation or strategic confusion, this workshop will get you back on track. In this fast-paced session participants will cover the essentials of strategic planning including best practices.
FRIDAY JULY 13, 2018
8:30 AM – 12:00 PM | Fundraising Outside the United States
Although fundraising has existed in all parts of the world for centuries, formal fundraising principles and practices have taken hold only in the last two or three decades. Fortunately, fundraising is flourishing globally, and leaders as well as professionals strive to carry it out successfully. This means acquiring and applying the best principles that work today, and understanding how these are adapted to individual regions, countries and organizations. This session presents those best principles and practices, allows for discussion as well as application, and prepares organizations to go to the next active, successful level in securing funds for worthy causes.
1:30 – 5:00 PM | Change Management and Immunity to Change
Participants will engage in the Immunity to ChangeTM map process. This approach helps leaders as individuals and teams to focus on what is most important to them when seeking to improve performance or develop their self.

This will be a summation of the week, a time to reflect on our experience. It will challenge participants to create an action plan that will implement two or three of the new ideas and strategies learned from the program.
