2011 - “Displacement, Humanitarianism, and Ethnic Cleansing in 20th Century Europe”

Tara Zahra, Homer J. Livingston Professor of East European History and the College at the University of Chicago, received the 2011 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies for her book Kidnapped Souls: National Indifference and the Battle for Children in the Bohemian Lands 1900-1948, published by Cornell University Press. She delivered her prize lecture, “The Battle for Children: Displacement, Humanitarianism, and Ethnic Cleansing in 20th Century Europe,” when accepting the award. Zahra’s research focuses on transnational approaches to the history of modern Europe.
