T. O’Neill Lane: The Irishman who Wrote a Dictionary by Hand
Lane’s Larger English-Irish Dictionary (1916) was the first full-size Irish dictionary to emerge during what is known as the Gaelic Revival period. It was conceived of, and written by, a talented and eccentric man called T. O’Neill Lane (1852-1915). He worked continually on his dictionary project throughout his eventful career path, and his very last act in life, it seems, was to sign a copy of his dictionary which had made it from the printers to West Limerick just in time. A little over a century later however, few outside the domain of Irish language studies have heard his name. Seaghan’s talk will detail reasons for remembering and commemorating this lexicographer in the 21st century.
