Featuring Vittorio Hösle, Paul G. Kimball Professor of Arts and Letters and faculty fellow at the Nanovic and Kroc Institutes. Among the great powers of the international system are the United States and the European Union. They are both based in the values of Western Enlightenment but have different approaches in their domestic and foreign policies. What are the differences? And which system is more likely to contribute to solving the problems of the 21st century?

Vittorio Hösle’s scholarly interests are in systematic philosophy (metaphysics, ethics, esthetics, political theory) and history of philosophy (mainly ancient and modern). He has written or edited 28 books and published about 90 articles. His books have appeared in 16 languages. Among his many awards and honors, he received the Fritz-Winter Prize of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences; he has been a visiting professor in many countries; and he has been a fellow at a number of organizations such as the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.
