Svitlana Hurkina joined the Institute during the fall 2015 semester from Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in Lviv, Ukraine. A historian of the Greek Catholic church in Ukraine, Prof. Hurkina directs UCU’s Institute of Church History and teaches courses on the history of Christianity. She also supervises the development of a large oral history archive focused on how the Church in Ukraine both accommodated and resisted the Soviet state. At Notre Dame, Prof. Hurkina worked with Rev. Prof. Yury Avvakumov (Theology) and professors John Cavadini (Theology) and Semion Lyandres (History).

While at Notre Dame, she gave a talk entitled, “Stalin’s “Holy War” and the Fate of the Ukrainian Greco Catholic Church (1944-1950).”
