Dr. Ivan Koniar, Associate Professor of Philosophy and previous Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Letters at the Catholic University of Ružomberok, Slovakia, joins the Institute this fall semester to work on a new monograph dedicated to investigating pre-Augustinian strands of 'just war' reasoning. Previously supported by the John Templeton Foundation, the Catholic University Leuven, the University of Glasgow, and the International Peace Research Institute (PRIO) in Oslo, Koniar has been publishing in international journals on the history of political thought and military ethics. He is now working on "The Just War Idea: A Classical Greek Perspective," a book-length study which seeks to engage a much wider range of classical texts on these matters than those by the more commonly-invoked Aristotle and Cicero.
