The Challenges Facing Both Shores of the Atlantic

November 30, 2023
Hesburgh Center Auditorium

Mikuláš Dzurinda, who served as prime minister of Slovakia from 1998-2006 and is currently president of the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies, joined the Nanovic Institute and the University of Notre Dame on Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. for his lecture on "The Challenges Facing Both Shores of the Atlantic." Using the acronym DEMOS (which refers to the Greek root word for "democracy"), he gave a survey of the ways we might work together as the United States and the European Union to answer the most pressing questions of our day, including those related to:

  • Defense
  • Economy
  • Migration
  • Oxygen (i.e., the environment)
  • Society

The conversations he prompted on these subjects stimulated a substantial discussion on democracy at the university, fulfilling the Nanovic Forum's mandate to bring Europe's leaders to Notre Dame and Notre Dame to European leaders.
