Summer Travel & Research Grants
The Nanovic Graduate Summer Travel & Research Grant supports graduate student research on topics in European studies undertaken during the summer term so that students can access sources of information necessary for the development or completion of their thesis or dissertation. The funding could be used as seed money for exploratory research into the scope or viability of a project or to support additional research on an established project. In some cases, this funding might also be used to support the completion of conference papers or papers for publication.

Number of Awards
Multiple. The exact number of grants awarded will vary depending on the number of applications received, merit, and the amount of available funds.
Applicants must be currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Notre Dame and be in satisfactory academic standing with at least a 3.0 GPA. Applicants may apply at any stage of their program, from matriculation to degree completion, but students must not be enrolled beyond the degree completion limits set by the Graduate School: ten semesters for master’s degree students and sixteen semesters for doctoral students. Eligible projects will demonstrate relevance for contemporary European Studies and have clear bearing on the applicant’s academic and professional goals.

All Graduate Grants will be awarded as reimbursements after students return and complete the expense reporting process. Dissertation Fellowship funding is the exception since funding is usually managed through the student's department. Student grantees may work with Anthony Travel to purchase flights prior to leaving, to avoid out of pocket expenses (with a max of $1200). Students who are able to provide cost-sharing for the project through other Notre Dame offices and who meet with the student coordinator prior to discuss the budget prior to applying, have an increased likelihood of success. If there are special concerns or questions, you are encouraged to follow up with the student coordinator.
Please complete the online form and upload your materials as prompted. Directors of Graduate Studies, academic advisors, and faculty supplying approval or letters of recommendation will be notified by the system to complete their portion of the application.
A complete application consists of the following distinct parts:
Student Portion (due by 11:59 p.m. on the deadline day)
• a completed online application form
• a current curriculum vitae
• a three- to four-page project description (In Word or pdf format only,11 point sans serif font, 1.5 line spacing, no kerning, one-inch margins)
• a detailed budget statement based on the Nanovic Budget Template
Faculty Portion (due no later than two days past the grant deadline day)
• one letter of recommendation
The project description should include the project’s objective, the research plan and/or methods designed to achieve this objective (including a schedule or itinerary if applicable), and the overall rationale for the project.
The budget statement must provide details about estimated expenses. The required information will be based on the Nanovic Budget Template and should detail the project’s costs in US dollars (USD) and include notes on the sources used to determine those costs. Include any exchange rates used in the calculation. Budgets should also state the names and amounts of other funding already obtained or being sought for the project (and decision dates, if known). Funding may not be used toward the purchase of materials or toward the payment of tuition (Notre Dame or otherwise). Expenses not approved in the original grant (including expenses incurred due to extending travel dates beyond the approved project) are the student's responsibility. Applicants are encouraged to meet with the student coordinator to discuss the budget prior to submitting an application.
The letter of recommendation should be from a faculty member at Notre Dame who is familiar with the student’s academic work and with the details of the specific project for which funding is being sought. An effective faculty letter will explicitly reflect upon the importance and viability of the project. Faculty letters that do not evince a familiarity with the student's proposal will greatly disadvantage the student's chances for receiving funding from the Nanovic.
A complete student portion of the application must be submitted to the online application form no later than 11:59pm on the deadline day. Letters of recommendation may be submitted up to two business days past the grant deadline day, and may be submitted to the Student Coordinator of the Nanovic Institute directly, if desired.
Failure to submit all required materials promptly may result in the application being excluded from consideration. Complete applications will be considered by a committee of institute fellows and directors, and decisions will be announced in writing within six weeks of the submission deadline. Please note that application materials will not be returned.
Terms & Conditions
Once awarded, the funding must be used to conduct the project as proposed in the application (to the best of the recipient’s ability). Funded initiatives must be completed by the end of the summer. If changes are made to the student's project or travel dates, the Institute needs to be notified prior to departing. If changes happen during the trip, the student must also inform the institute right away.
Combined funding from this grant and other sources may not exceed the project’s total budget, and applicants must promptly inform the Nanovic Institute of additional funding received at any point from application submission through completion of the research trip. Recipients must return any paid funds if they cancel the project and must repay any non-refundable expenses incurred by the Nanovic Institute (i.e. airfare directly paid) if cancellation is not due to documented illness or another justifying circumstance.
After completing the research opportunity, grant recipients must provide the Nanovic Institute with a 500-1000 word report about the experience and its outcome, as well as at least three digital photographs (3000 pixels or wider) of the recipient on location. Reports and photographs must be submitted through the online portal according to the directions in the grant award packet by the deadline communicated at the time of award. Unless permission is expressly denied, the Nanovic Institute retains permission to share these reports and photographs.
Research Involving Human Subjects – Institutional Review Board
Graduate students engaged in human subjects research (i.e., interaction with a living person or private information from existing data, documents, records or diagnostic specimens) must have their projects approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and pass the internet-based training modules on the protection of human subjects. Review deadlines, submission process, and information about IRB education and training may be found on the Notre Dame Research website.
