2021 - "The Unsettling of Europe: How Migration Reshaped a Continent"

Peter Gatrell, professor of economic history at the University of Manchester, received the 2021 Laura Shannon Prize in Contemporary European Studies for his book The Unsettling of Europe: How Migration Reshaped a Continent, published by Basic Books. He delivered his prize lecture, of the same title, when accepting the award. A graduate of the University of Cambridge and Kiev State University, Gatrell has been at the University of Manchester since 1976. He teaches a variety of subjects including 19th and 20th century Russian history, European economic history, the social and cultural history of modern war and, for the past 15 years, the history of mass population displacement in the modern world.
