Berlin Seminar in Transnational European Studies

(part of a series)

Location: Berlin, Germany

The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts at the University of Georgia, and the Department of German and Russian Languages and Literatures and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame will host the inaugural Seminar in Transnational European Studies in Berlin. The week-long seminar will take place May 27-Jun2, 2018 and bring together a total of 20 faculty members and Ph.D. students from both institutions, representing a wide range of disciplines, including Political Science, International Affairs, Philosophy, Psychology, Creative Writing, English, History, German, Russian, French, Journalism, Architecture, and Business.

A joint initiative of the University of Georgia and the University of Notre Dame, made possible through generous support by the Max Kade Foundation, the seminar aims to expand knowledge and understanding of transnational Europe among U.S.-based scholars, advancing the discourse on campus on issues related to Europe, the EU, and Germany’s role in the European Union. Within this larger context, the seminar hopes to initiate new research projects and curricular innovation, including collaboration between faculty from the two participating institutions.

The seminar is directed by Martin Kagel, A.G. Steer Professor of German and associate dean of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, William Donahue, the Rev. John C. Cavanaugh, C.S.C., Professor of the Humanities and chair of the Department of German and Russian Languages and Literatures, and Nicholas Allen, Franklin Professor of English and director of the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.
