The Department of Political Science recently awarded Alice Ciciora the Helen Kellogg Institute Prize for the best senior thesis in Comparative Politics. Her thesis, “Integrating Islam in Ireland”, was based upon research conducted in Ireland on a 2008 Undergraduate Travel and Research grant from the Nanovic Institute for European Studies. Professor Andrew Gould, faculty fellow of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies and of the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies, acted as advisor for the thesis.
“… I was able to extend my semester abroad in Dublin, Ireland by an additional seven weeks. I used this time to conduct research for my political science senior honor’s thesis [on] how Muslim and Irish leaders view the status of the integration and accommodation of Muslims into Irish society…Conducting independent first-hand research in Ireland was an amazing opportunity. Not only was I able to gather information that I would have no chance of finding in any publication, but I was also able to develop contacts with leaders in Ireland who can aid me in future research."
