September 18 - Information Session: Minor in European Studies

To be successful in today’s global world, students need to study the history, politics, culture, and languages of other nations.  To assist students in this, the Nanovic Institute for European Studies administers the Minor in European Studies (MES), a program designed to reward those students who take additional courses about Europe beyond their university and departmental requirements.
Open to all undergraduates. Please call 631-5123 to reserve your place.

September 22-23 - Conference - Church-State Relations and Religious Liberty: Comparative Perspectives
University of Notre Dame
The conference will provide the opportunity for world-renowned scholars, jurists, and advocates from countries including Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Italy, and the United States to engage the complex issues of church-state relations and religious liberty from a truly comparative perspective.

Opening address, sessions, and keynote address are all open to the public.

The conference is jointly sponsored by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, the Notre Dame Law School, the Program in American Democracy, the Office of Research, the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts, and the College of Arts and Letters

October 6-7 - Conference - New Paradigms for Revolutionary Studies: French-American Colloquium
Organized by Julia Douthwaite (ND) & Lesley Walker (IUSB)
Sponsored as part of an ongoing collaboration by a team of scholars from the Université de Provence, the Université de Toulouse, the University of Notre Dame and Indiana University South Bend, this bilingual, international colloquium will be held on the campuses of IU South Bend and the University of Notre Dame on Monday and Tuesday, October 6-7, 2008. The event is envisioned an opportunity for Francophone and Anglophone scholars in literature, history, and art to collaborate in creating the paradigms that will shape future research in revolutionary studies. Keynote speaker Professor Lynn Hunt (Eugen Weber Professor of History, University of California Los Angeles) will present an illustrated lecture on "Revolution and Subjectivity: Towards a New Paradigm?" on Monday night, October 6, at 7:00pm in the Snite Museum Annenberg Auditorium. A reception will follow in the Snite Museum lobby.

A special exhibit on the French Revolution in the Snite Museum has been conceived to accompany a variety of " revolutionary" courses being taught in Fall 2008 on the campuses of the University of Notre Dame and IU South Bend, as well as a conference organized by faculty on both campuses. The conference, the art exhibit, and the related display of rare book materials in the Hesburgh Library Department of Special Collections, are all made possible by generous funding from Indiana University and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

How do you start a research project? Nanovic Institute Faculty Fellows present a workshop for students on how to develop their research projects to meet grant and academic criteria.

October 7-8 - Cultural Event: The Mushroom Picker
7:30 pm, DeBartolo Performing Arts Center
In this one-man play, playwright Patrick Dewane tells the story of his grandfather, a man whose odd radio-handle during the 1970s—"The Mushroom Picker"—was really a clue to his incredible history as a Czech-American soldier fighting in his ancestral homeland during World War II.

October 9-11 - Graduate Student Conference - From Res Publica to the Republic of Letters: The Common Good in Transition and Translation
University of Notre Dame
Graduate students in the Humanities and Social Sciences in the Greater Midwest meet future colleagues and to have the opportunity to present some of their research in the context of ongoing debates—historical, philosophical, religious, and political—about the common good in this interdisciplinary conference.
Sponsored by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies, the Univeristy of Notre Dame Graduate School, and the Kellogg Institute for International Studies.

EUROPEAN IDENTITIES? Regionalism, Nationalism, and Religion

University of Notre Dame London Centre, United Kingdom
Organized by Professors Andrew Gould and Anthony M. Messina, the conference convenes American and European scholars to address an overarching question: What are the implications of the persistence of robust regional and nationalist identities and movements and the emergence of newer, religious and ethnic identities within the member states of the European Union for the project of “ever closer” European integration?

and Russian Languages and Literatures
Women in German provides a democratic forum for all people interested in feminist approaches to German literature and culture or in the intersection of gender with other categories of analysis such as sexuality, class, race, and ethnicity. Through its annual conference, panels at national professional meetings, and through the publication of the Women in German Yearbook, the organization promotes feminist scholarship of outstanding quality. Women in German is committed to making school and college curricula inclusive and seeks to create bridges, cross boundaries, nurture aspiration, and challenge assumptions while exercising critical self-awareness. Women in German is dedicated to eradicating discrimination in the classroom and in the teaching profession at all levels
