'Elijah and Mendelssohn's "Jewishness"' is a lecture by Professor Jeffrey Sposato, followed by a panel with Artist-in-Residence Nathan Gunn and Professor of Conducting Carmen-Helena Téllez (Nanovic Fellow).
Jeffrey Sposato, Professor of Music at the University of Houston, and author of the book Mendelssohn and the Price of Assimilation, will examine the Mendelssohn's dramatic oratorio Elijah in relation to both the German composer's Jewish heritage and his deeply held Lutheran beliefs. Then he will be joined by Nathan Gunn and Carmen-Helena Téllez in a panel discussion in which they together reflect on their interpretation of Elijahbased these tensions and syntheses in Mendelssohn's cultural and religious worldview.
