James Fiumara is a Ph.D. candidate in English and Cinema Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His dissertation explores the aesthetics of sound in the classical-era Hollywood horror film. He has published an article on the Quay Brothers film Street of Crocodiles in the journal Kinoeye and has presented conference papers at the Society of Cinema & Media Studies and the Society for the Cognitive Study of the Moving Image. He lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Quay twins’ stop-motion animates jittery puppets in shorts operate on nearly subconscious level, their abstract, surrealist imagery hopelessly confounding literal interpretations. Shadowy Black-and-white opaqueness and stunningly active cinematography recreate the irrational logic of alluring fright.
